Once In A While

Did you ever feel like doing something just a little different from your norm?

I know I do sometimes.

I have been mad busy lately. I have been zipping all over the place and staying up much later than I know I should on work nights. My most recent birthday milestone put me on the later half of my thirties and while the face can lie sometimes, the body knows and it's not letting me forget. It really is too bad I'm so hard-headed. This is going to be one knockdown drag-out fight, lol. Not only that, but the mill is bustling with things to do and I have been doing them all! Well, almost. The next event I intend to attend, Tavern Night, isn't until November, so I can catch my breath between now and then.

In the meantime, my various projects have been piling up on me. For the past few days, I have been trying to cut down on the amount of miscellaneous fluff hanging out in my craft room. This week, I came away with a few skeins for show and tell.

I finished spinning the Kool-Aid spin and I really like it! It's so sunny! But, it does remind me of a previous spin…I loved that spin too. Thankfully, this was done on a spinning wheel though, so it is slightly unique.

You know, I think I'm a summer girl. I really love this yarn…mostly for the color. The weather in Delaware has been so yuck and I think this was me sticking my tongue out at it. But, this week, I admit to a little moodiness. Was it all in the weather? I don't know. But I think it showed up in my spinning.

I wanted to spin something unusual. Or at least unusual for me. I remembered a while back, I ordered a textured batt from Sosae Caetano.

This is called Root Veggies. It's a hodgepodge of BFL, baby camel, bamboo and sparkle. Having never spun a textured batt before, I felt it would be perfect for “something different.” I was right.

It's near impossible to get all of those various fibers to draft similarly! Some of them are “grabby” while others are trying to slip past your fingers altogether. But, it's really enjoyable, especially when you need to throw a huge monkey wrench in the whole plan.

I usually try to spin the last little bit of fluff differently than the main spin just to see what could have been and this was no different. At the end of this spin, I decided to chain-ply the rest.

I really like this little guy.

But, I wasn't done. I wanted something even more different. So, with the last little bit of the Kool-Aid spin, I made a thick and thin yarn that I felt could pass for “even more unusual for me.”
